What's this buzz about Mobile Web
Siddhi Pathak, Project Manager : 27 May 2010 / 10:28 AM : 5
Everywhere I go these days, I see a Mobile Website or Smartphone application in commercials. Believe it or not our local smoothie store has a Mobile Website. So why is there such a rush of Mobile Websites?
The analysis is simple – fast moving consumers (even high school students) like to reach to information instantly: anyplace, anytime – all the time. Being an iPhone user, I can tell that even when I am at home, I like to pull up my iPhone for a quick information search rather than booting my laptop. It’s convenient and easy.
All of us can see the growth around us every minute of our lives. For those of you who would like to see numbers here are a few:
- Per research and surveys conducted by ComScore 1 of 3 (or 33%) of people are Mobile Media Users as of Jan 2010
- Mobile Active’s projection is half of the world’s population will have access to Mobile Web by the end of 2010.
- Web access from mobile devices was up 110 percent in the U.S. and 148 percent worldwide in 2009 (DotMobi).
When I am with my friends and family they always tend to ask me: So what exactly is Mobile Web and if I have an internet website shouldn’t it just be ready for my consumers to view it from their mobile? Well, Mobile Web is a new dimension of Web specifically designed to render information on mobile phones and…. Nah!!!! Just having an internet website doesn’t make it mobile ready. The reason is simple – Mobile Devices have less real-estate, browser considerations and bandwidth requirements are much different than traditional PCs. Also look at the variety of devices out there that differ in screen sizes, supported formats for audio/video/images, some are touch screen some are made for scroll, varied network coverage …ahh the list is never ending.
This is the reason to put trust in a company that specializes in creating Mobile Websites and invests their resources in continuous research in the emerging technologies for mobile to bring up your first Mobile Website. And yes! With the growing market share of mobile devices your business does need to have a mobile presence to continue flourishing.
Interestingly in recent years I’ve seen another evolution in this area –selling products and services via Mobile Websites and SMS/MMS. This is a new dimension in the Mobile ecosystem. Recently my team and I’ve designed and developed Mobile Web Product solutions for a large publishing company enabling books, huge quantity data and streaming videos available for mobile users on the go. It is an amazing site to see a 30 min video being streamed on mobile devices. The possibilities with Mobile are endless!
This is just an introduction to the world that keeps me passionate and inspired each day. In the next post, I’ll share information about what makes a good Mobile Product and keep you updated on the industry movement. In the meantime hit your Mobile Web with your device and see what you can find….Look at a website from your mobile device and experience the revolution.
Keep observing mobility!!

Great article! The opportunity for continued success and growth offered by mobile web technology is too overwhelming to ignore. I look forward to hearing more about it.Grant : 28 May 2010
I have used smart phones, as they known now, for about 10 years and the biggest turn off to browsing definitely is not necessarily screen size, but how websites adapt to screen size. Yet the desktop screens are getting larger and hence web designers design accordingly. I believe that we are still at a time when sites are either desktop or laptop orientated, or mobile oriented. Hybrid sites rarely seem to work. YET.Nachi : 03 June 2010
