Advantages of a Collaborative Retail Inventory Management Solution
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 11 May 2011 / 3:07 PM : 9
Deciding how much product is needed, when it is needed, and where it's needed-is one of the main challenges of any supply chain. The implementation and stabilization of a Retail Inventory Management solution (often referred to as Vendor Managed Inventory, Quick Response, Supplier Managed Inventory, or Collaborative, Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment) was the approach the Parts Division of a major OEM which supports the entire US, Mexican and Canadian dealer body with parts for maintenance and repair of vehicles, took on.
As part of the team of professional demand planners, inventory managers and technical analysts that were deployed at the loca...

Enabling Retail Nirvana...
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 10 February 2011 / 1:35 PM : 0
Retail Nirvana is when you have the Right Product, at the Right Place, at the Right Time, in the Right Quantities, and at the Right Price.
In the automotive service parts business, whether it is for passenger cars, heavy trucks, or construction and agricultural equipment, Nirvana is to have parts waiting on the shelf for the customer at point of service. In most cases, this means having the part in stock at the Parts Counter within the Dealership. In other words, having the right product, at the right place…
Another way to think about it is that the goal is Fixed First Visit - the vehic...

Pondering Unique Supply Chain Challenges
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 20 December 2010 / 9:24 AM : 1
Articles on Supply Chain Management for traditional supply chains are “thick on the ground” these days. But some recent experiences have me ruminating on the alternative supply chains that you may not often see featured in a case study, white paper, or professional article.
One such alternative supply chain exists within the pawn shop industry.
I had the experience of entering a pawn shop recently, the short version of the story is a local reality show on truTV enticed me to come in and try to sell something while the cameras “watched.” (Shoot me a note and I will give you the particulars, including the long version of the tale.) This experien...

What does Pop Tart Sushi mean for the Supply Chain?
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 20 October 2010 / 7:18 AM : 0
Kellogg's recently opened a pop up store in Times Square cleverly named Pop Tart World. At Pop Tart world, which will be open for a limited time frame (although there are reports that Kellogg is considering extending it beyond January 2011) locals and tourists alike can enjoy an hourly light show, buy a t-shirt, and enjoy an innovative snack like Pop Tart Sushi.
If you are like me, the concept of "Pop Tart Sushi" (three kinds of minced Pop-Tarts rolled in fruit roll-up) probably makes you smile a bit and think 'oooohhhhkkkkaaaay- that's interesting.' And I'll admit there is a little part of me that wants to go there and check it out, have...

A Benefit of Supply Chain Network Design and Analysis to Consider
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 28 July 2010 / 10:25 AM : 3
The complexity of a network design and optimization study significantly increases when components such as multinational business units and third-party logistics/services are added. But then, so do the opportunities for increasing operational efficiencies and gaining a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the respective supply chain.
One often overlooked, often intangible benefit of completing a Supply Chain Network Analysis Project is the key learning's. The data collection and project development process are great opportunities for organizations to collaborate and learn.
Take for example, a project where a major corpor...

Benefits of a Network Optimization and Design Study
Jill Hays, Senior Supply Chain Consultant : 02 June 2010 / 11:56 AM : 0
A network optimization and design study is essentially the modeling of multiple “what if” scenarios, enabling a greater understanding of the current network resiliency and resource utilization, as well as understanding the potential for improvement. With the increasing pressure to lower supply chain operating costs, while simultaneously increasing customer service levels—coupled with the increasing complexities of today’s dynamic supply chains—many organizations are turning to network optimization as a key strategy to achieve these objectives and create a robust supply chain of the future.
