Michael has 15 years experience in applying technology solutions to business issues within Retail and FMCG organisations in Europe, the United States, Asia and ANZ. He set up and managed CIBER's country organisation in New Zealand for the past 4 years and has most recently relocated to Australia. As part of the ANZ Management Team, Michael is now responsible for the set up of CIBER's Innovation and Strategic Business Consulting practice in Australia and New Zealand. Before CIBER, Michael held various positions within SAP in its Trading Industry Business Unit in Europe and ANZ over a period of 8 years.

Coming back to the ROI Question – there are both qualitative as well as quantitative measures that apply and it will need to be decided which ones you as an organisation want to focus on.

Qualitative Measures could be:

  • Number of people that befriend us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter
  • Number of influential blogs that refer our brand, products, stores
  • Number of site visitors
  • Increase in positive customer feedback
  • However, if none of these measures have a direct impact on improving Sales or decreasing Cost, then the ROI equation does not stack up.

    When focusing on Social Media, Facebook in particular, a new term was created most recently – F-Commerce! Everyone knows e-Commerce and even M-Commerce is familiar, however since the introduction of Facebook Shops, retailers (in fact anybody) can setup a webshop as an extension to their Facebook page and trade online. The advantage being that when befriending a retailer on Facebook one gets access to the retailers Wall, offers, shop, etc but in return the retailer gets access to their customers’ and ‘friends’ details which can be immensely valuable for marketing purposes and customer insight.
