Once you have selected your project portfolio for the year; it’s time to assign resources to that portfolio. Portfolio Resource Management is an efficient and effective process of resource request, resource allocation, resource assignment, resource tracking, and resource forecasting for the entire PPM lifecycle. Project Portfolio Selection
Walker, Woody M, Senior Director - Delivery Management : 21 January 2011 / 5:18 PM : 0
So you’ve collected the demand for projects from your organization, not an easy feat! Congratulations! Next step is portfolio selection. Again, this can be a simple process to start with and you can continue to improve as your organization gets comfortable with Project Portfolio Management (PPM).
In this blog, we will discuss portfolio selection. Portfolio selection refers to the process of grouping, comparing, selecting and prioritizing the IT project portfolio to ensure business alignment.
How does your organization select their project portfolio?
Based on individual business cases and not from an overall project portfolio view?
Based on a committee that ranks and prioritizes projects...

IT Project Portfolio Management – Where do you start?
Walker, Woody M, Senior Director - Delivery Management : 28 October 2010 / 11:47 AM : 0
So now that you’ve decided that you need Project Portfolio Management (PPM) in your organization, how do you get started?
PPM has multiple process categories such as demand management, portfolio selection, resource management, project management, portfolio governance and financial management. In this blog, we will focus on demand management.
PPM demand management can be defined as the process for capturing and understanding all demand for IT projects in your organization. Demand Management is a crucial step to begin to manage the influx of project requests coming into the IT department. You will need to get the project request process under control so you can start to plan, forecast and utilize your resources effectively. Start by asking yourself these qu...

Custom Mobile App vs. Transcoding vs. Website Builders
Siddhi Pathak, Project Manager : 20 September 2010 / 10:16 AM : 0
Hello! It has been a few weeks since my last blog – but one question kept me wondering. I was on a call with a large client who intended to take their current desktop information and port it to mobile. And the one big question mark for them was whether to use Mobile Transcoders, Mobile Website Builders or to invest in a custom website. Initially this seemed like a no-brainer to me – I thought the custom website should be the way to go since it is custom. But thinking from a client perspective I feel some distinction and some deep thought was indeed necessary.
Let’s first begin with a little bit of understanding the terms being used in this blog.
What are Mobile Website Builders?: There are sites out there which run wizards ...

Let’s take the next step and take our company to Mobile…But how?

Ok..so we all already know how rapidly the Mobile Market has been growing and a lot of companies are jumping to the next level by taking their products/services/information over to Mobile. Look at the first blog here for appealing reasons to be on Mobile Web. Mobility is the mantra -> the speed at which new mobile websites are launching is very similar to the dot com boom.
Are you still stuck with that old traditional desktop site and do you still believe that it’s going to be enough for your business to sustain in the market with an ever-advancing technologically savvy customer base? If you answered “Yes” to that question...well maybe visiting a Mobile Web Blog isn’t a goo...

What's this buzz about Mobile Web
Siddhi Pathak, Project Manager : 27 May 2010 / 10:28 AM : 5
Everywhere I go these days, I see a Mobile Website or Smartphone application in commercials. Believe it or not our local smoothie store has a Mobile Website. So why is there such a rush of Mobile Websites?
The analysis is simple – fast moving consumers (even high school students) like to reach to information instantly: anyplace, anytime – all the time. Being an iPhone user, I can tell that even when I am at home, I like to pull up my iPhone for a quick information search rather than booting my laptop. It’s convenient and easy.
All of us can see the growth around us every minute of our lives. For those of you who would like to see numbers here are a few:

Michael Vick's on your team!
John Roach, Senior Project Manager : 05 June 2009 / 8:20 AM : 3

Michael Vick’s on your team!
In the not too distant future, you get a call from your program manager. Former NFL heavyweight Michael Vick has joined the company and is being assigned to your team. Do you – A. Panic and quit; B. Complain up the chain; or C. Be glad you have a star performer.
Obviously a rhetorical question, Michael Vick and people like him pose an interesting challenge for management, however, no matter how you view the recent debate on his reinstatement. On one hand, Mr. Vick is a high performing athlete who’s value to the franchise can be measured in his per annum salary that’s greater than that earned by probably 98 percent of the people alive today. On the other hand, he’s apparently morally challenged and his byzantine ap...

For the Successful Project Manager, the Cup is Always Empty
John Roach, Senior Project Manager : 21 May 2009 / 9:27 AM : 2
Is an empty glass better than a full one? We often use the example of a glass and water as an analogy to illustrate our position on whether or not someone is an optimist or a pessimist depending upon whether they see the glass as half full or half empty. There is, however, another analogy we can use involving a glass and water that digs a little deeper into how successful someone is at assimilating new information—and how they should be expected to respond when things really heat up. It goes something like this: a full glass cannot accept anything new-- whereas an empty glass can. A person can be said to be either empty or full depending upon how certain they are about the nature of things.
If we ourselves are full of ideas and preconceptions on how things should...

Repurposing Your Project Management Office (PMO)
Walker, Woody M, Senior Director - Delivery Management : 11 May 2009 / 1:52 PM : 0
In an economic environment characterized by near unprecedented losses in business profitability, jobs and personal wealth, the average business professional is focused on keeping the lights on. With thousands of organizations faced with delivering an acceptable level of business with fewer and fewer resources, who can afford Project Managers or a Project Management Office (PMO) full of Project Managers and Project Administrators?
Some leaders may feel that project management is not critical to the operation and survival of their business and so the PMO is sometimes the first thing to be disbanded. Project Managers are laid off or re-purposed into other areas of the business. This critical mistake can lead to catastrophic impact on your business when your organi...
