A recent article in Campus Technology featured Mount Ida College and $2.1 million in three grants received by the four year, independent institution in Newton, MA.  Most significant of the three was a $1.72 million Title III grant from the Department of Education through the Strengthening Institutions Programs.  David Healy, Vice President for Finance and Administration at Mount Ida, states that the funding will be used to bring the college into a new millennium through enhancements to the technological infrastructure and implementation of a...

CRM 9.1 Events Management Includes Needed Business Processes

Ron Gaskins, Director of Higher Education Strategy  :  03 December 2009 / 1:50 PM  :  0 0 comments

During Oracle Open World I attended several sessions on the Oracle CRM 9.1 release.  I was impressed with the enhancements in all modules but the one that really caught my attention was Events Management.

Vendors have provided constituent relations solutions in many different colors and flavors over the years.  But...comprehensive, enterprise wide event management functionality has always been lacking.  Management of events has been a labor intensive, expensive and complex activity in higher education.  Even after allocation of institutional resources the results often did not meet desired expectations.  And what is...

Going Green - Beverage Containers made from Corn…

Ron Gaskins, Director of Higher Education Strategy  :  26 October 2009 / 1:33 PM  :  0 0 comments

Beverage Containers made from Corn???

While in Boulder, CO recently I had lunch at great eatery, Snarf’s Sub Shop.   The most interesting part of the visit was the beverage container.  Printed on the side was “Made from Corn.”  When I think of corn, things like popcorn, corndogs, corn fritters, Beaufort Boil and other come to mind.  Ethanol and now beverage containers…what next?

The beverage containers at Oracle Open World a couple of weeks ago were made totally from vegetables.

If one stops and thinks of the vast quantity of beverage cups that are consumed on a d...

Navigating 'The Great Stimilus Package Road Race'…Where Is The Arra GPS?

Ron Gaskins, Director of Higher Education Strategy  :  08 September 2009 / 12:06 PM  :  0 0 comments

Do you have the GPS?   If you do, I am sure your colleagues will appreciate your willingness to share.  I know for certain, I would.

It is obvious that the “ARRA road course” is still being built, informational and direction signs aren't quite ready and there are hazards and perils to be dealt with along the way such as accountability and transparency.

My first attempt at becoming knowledgeable about “the course” was to use a search engine.  In February, Jessica Renee Napier of Converge Magazine reported that if you search the words “stimulus package” and “education” the result will be more than 14 millio...

Constituency Information Breaches – Can’t Happen To Us…

Constituency information breaches do occur and with increasing frequency.  Just this month a major university medical school disclosed a breach of personal information for approximately 160,000 individuals.  Even more concerning is that sources report that the education and healthcare industries are the most vulnerable to information breaches. As a point of reference, the link below provides a chronological view of breaches over the past five years.

Student Expectations - The Challenge and the Opportunity

Ron Gaskins, Director of Higher Education Strategy  :  12 May 2009 / 2:48 PM  :  0 0 comments

Dr. Ned Doffoney, Chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District in California delivered a key note address at the recent conference for the state’s community colleges chief information officers.  His message of meeting student expectations is certainly not a new topic, but by interweaving the difference in students of today and those of previous generations, his personal experiences and humor he crafted a messaged that clearly depicted the challenge of meeting student expectations...and the obligations of institutions to accomplish these opportunities.

To paraphrase just a few of Dr. Doffoney’s comments,...
